Butterfly Blue Pea flower also known as Asian Pigeonwings and Darwin Pea is a plant that grows as a vine or creeper. It is a native plant to equatorial Asia including Borneo.
The distinct feature of this plant is the color of its flowers – deep cobalt blue shade with light sunshiny yellow and white markings. As such it is often use in the culinary world as natural coloring for food and beverages.
In Malaysia for example, the Butterfly Blue Pea flowers is used in traditional food like Nasi Kerabu/ulam for blue rice, or in the Nyonya cuisine to color glutinous rice and traditional desserts or simply to make magical color changing lemonade or herbal tea!
