Sambal Goreng Number 8 Vegan

Sambal Goreng Vegan with chili level No. 8 out of 10 is HAK’s take on Sambal – Malaysia’s heritage condiment. Cooked using fresh spicy local chilies and Asian aromatics and umami from mushroom & seaweed. Perfect with rice, noodles or used as a base for Asian stir fry recipes.

Inspiration of the Sambal Goreng’s name:

Sambal oh sambal……

Today’s sambal story is about Sambal Goreng. Before we proceed any further let me just explain what is Sambal Goreng – at least this is how we cook Malaysia’s popular condiment Sambal Goreng or hot sauce based on our family’s recipe.

At Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen, we intend to create the convenience in a bottle. Those who makes sambal knows the extensive process of making sambal as it requires unrushed cooking time to allow the “tumis” or sauteing process to cook all the ingredients to perfection.

Based on the write up below, you get an idea that sambal preference is rather an individual thing.

18 individuals consisted of regular customers, first timers and friends in Lahad Datu tasted the trial version of Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen Sambal Goreng in early June 2021. Like all other items on Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen’s menu this Sambal Goreng got us Sambal-ed Out!

We documented the feedbacks and put the chili heat score on a spreadsheet. We requested from those who tried our Sambal Goreng the heat level from the chili as follows:

1: Nah not spicy at all.

10: Very spicy!

Out of the 18 testers, below are the results:

  • Average of the testers rated the chili heat level 8 out of 10. Just the right heat level.
  • 1 tester said it was 11 out of 10 – too spicy!
  • 4 testers rated the chili heat level at 5 out of 10 – could be spicier.

3 testers recommended to put more sugar.

8 testers said they were neutral on the sugar level and that they could still live with or without sweet sambals.

The rest of the testers said the sweet, umami and tangy level was just right and not to add or reduce anything.

Based on the figures above, we noticed the frequent 8 number appearing in this Sambal Goreng introduction process. 8 is also associated as a lucky number in Chinese and other Asian culture. So when I asked my good friend Kendra on how to associate Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen’s Sambal Goreng to the number 8, she simply said “Sambal Number 8” like “Chanel No 5”. Issue solved. Simon and I agreed to take on Kendra’s suggestion but we will also include the word “goreng” which means “fried” to further classify the type of sambal.

Storage instructions:

  • All HAK’s Sambal Collection contains NO preservatives. As such it is important to keep the sambals in refrigerator after opening.
  • Use clean dry spoon (avoid using wet spoon to scoop the sambal) to maintain the quality of the sambal
  • The sambal will turn to a harder consistency when being refrigerated due to the vegetable oil content in the sambal. Before eating, remove the sambal in advance to allow time for the oil to melt at room temperature or place the sambal over hot steaming dish, or you can pan heat the sambal on low heat flame or heat it in a microwave.
